Obituary of Ethel Maxey Burkett

RURAL RETREAT, Va.

Ethel Maxey Burkett, age 95, passed away at her home in Rural Retreat, Va. on Friday, May 24, 2019 after a lengthy illness.

She was the daughter of the late Homer and Carrie Pickle Maxey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Neal Burkett, Sr.; one son, George Neal Burkett, Jr.; one sister, Joanne (Nadine) Wright and husband, Edward; four brothers, Bill, Richard, Frank, and John; and one brother-in-law, James Smith.

Ethel was a member Fulton United Methodist Church and when she was able, was active in the Lords Acre Sale and many other church activities. She retired from the State VPI Nutritionist Program after working in the Smyth County Area for ten years.

She is survived by one son, Philip D. Burkett and wife, Jennifer of Rural Retreat, Va.; one sister, Lola Maxey Smith of Glade Spring, Va.; grandchildren, Deanne B. Bonham and husband, Victor, Jennifer Burkett, Logan Burkett and wife, Kayla, Hannah Brennan and husband, Michael; great-grandchildren, Matthew Hamm and Madilyn Bonham; sisters-in-law, Laura Booth, JoAnn Maxey, and Mary Maxey; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Fulton United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat, Va.
